During the heyday of the fur-trade era from the late 1600s to the early 1800s, voyageurs were engaged in the transporting of furs by canoe during the fur trade era. Voyageur literally means "traveller" in French, as more often than not, voyageurs were French-Canadian. As demand and competition for furs grew, these travels often took voyageurs on excursions along unchartered lakes and rivers, and through unknown forests. For this reason, voyageurs were often accompanied by an Indigenous guide; this was so often the case, that it is rare to see a depiction of a voyageur without an Indigenous comrade. Voyageurs are fabled folk heroes in French Canada, where their lives and feats have been celebrated in folklore and music.
