This two-part coin set includes the highest-quality double-struck proof coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1997, together with a 1972 proof silver dollar. The 1997 coins come presented in a custom mahogany-finish glass-top case that beautifully showcases all the coins. The highlight of the 1997 set is a large silver dollar that marks the 25th anniversary of Team Canada's victory over the Soviet Union in the famous hockey showdown of 1972. The coin shows the goal scored by Paul Henderson with just 34 seconds left in regulation time. All denominations from the cent to the two-dollar coin are included, and five of the coins are struck in 0.925 sterling silver (nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar and silver dollar).
Bonus 1972 Silver Dollar Coin While the 1997 silver dollar marks the 25th anniversary of the Canadian hockey triumph in the 1972 Summit Series, this coin dates from the year the famous series was played. The design features the classic Voyageur design that appeared on silver dollars from 1935 to 1966, and was re-introduced for this 1972 proof-quality collector issue.
Many Canadians of a certain age recall watching that final game. Canada kept coming but couldn't score. With 1:44 left in the game and the faceoff in the Canadian end, Canada huddled. The tension in Canada was unbearable.
With less than a minute left, Henderson called Cournoyer off the ice and made his mad dash to the Soviet end of the ice, and then Foster Hewitt's voice was heard: "Henderson takes a wild stab at it and falls... right in front to Henderson... scores! Henderson has scored for Canada!"
