From the jungles to the deserts to the amazing wildlife, the majesty of Africa has been captured in the 2018 Shapes of Africa series of coins, by using a minting technique where design elements are literally cut out of the coin. Africa's most famous animals are featured; choose from the lion, giraffe, springbok, meerkat, ostrich, or rhinoceros, all shown in incredible detail against a backdrop of its natural habitat, with each coin featuring a unique cutout in the shape of the animal, and a unique privy mark. A seventh style is also available: the African continent in vibrant colour. All coins are legal tender in Djibouti, have a diameter of 50 mm, a denomination of 250 Francs, a limited mintage of only 7,500 each, and are struck in one ounce of pure silver.
Style A: Lion Lions live together in large groups known as prides. Females do most of the hunting, while males are responsible for protecting the pride. A lion's roar can be heard up to five miles away. A lion's vision is roughly six times more sensitive to light than a human's, giving them a distinct advantage when hunting at night.
Style B: Giraffe The giraffe is the world's tallest living land animal. Its neck has the same amount of vertebrae (seven) as the human neck, except that each one measures up to 25 cm long! Giraffes can reach a speed of 60 kilometres per hour at gallop over a short distance, and 50 kilometres per hour over a longer distance.
Style C: Springbok The springbok can reach speeds up to 55 miles per hour. It stands 75 centimetres high, and weighs from 66 to 105 pounds. Dark stripes extend across its white face, from the corner of the eyes to the mouth, and a dark patch marks the forehead.
Style D: Meerkat On average, a meerkat measures about 50 centimetres long, including its tail. Meerkats have long, strong, curved claws that they use for digging burrows, and with their excellent eyesight, they can spot predators in the air from more than 300 metres away. A clan of meerkats will always have one "sentry" on guard to watch out for predators while the others forage for food.
Style E: Ostrich Ostriches have the biggest eyes of any land mammal, and three sets of eyelids. Because they can't fly, when threatened they'll run instead, and can reach speeds of up to about 70 kilometres per hour. An ostrich's wings can reach a span of about two metres.
Style F: Rhinoceros The rhinoceros is a large, herbivorous mammal identified by its characteristic horned snout. The word rhinoceros comes from the Greek words rhino ("nose") and ceros ("horn").
Style G: African Continent This coin features the continent of Africa in vibrant full colour.
