Product Overview
Discover one of the greatest wonders of the ancient world with this $5 Mausoleum of Harlicarnassus coin. Weighing just under an ounce of sterling silver and issued by Palau in 2009, the coin presents the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus as it appeared in antiquity.

Considered one of the most beautiful structures ever built, the temple was constructed between 353 and 350 BCE as a tomb for Mausolus, a satrap (governor) of the Persian Empire. The building was about 45 metres high, and all four sides were adorned with sculptural reliefs, each created by one of four Greek master sculptors. This impressive structure led to the wide use of the term mausoleum. It was considered such an aesthetic triumph that it was named as one of the greatest wonders of antiquity. The temple was constructed from 353 to 350 BCE, and was finally destroyed by earthquakes after standing for more than 1,500 years. In 1494, the original stones were re-used to fortify Bodrum Castle.
