Product Overview
This is an attractive premium-quality bronze coin issued by the Roman Emperor Valens from 364 to 378 CE. It would have been recognized and readily accepted by Roman citizens who used it on a daily basis over 1,600 years ago. On the front of the coin is the likeness of Emperor Valens. On the back is one of the various gods and goddesses of the Roman pantheon.

Valens
Flavius Valens was a younger brother of Valentinian I. Upon ascending to the throne, Valentinian made Valens co-emperor and the two brothers ruled jointly; Valentinian over the western half of the empire and Valens over the east. Much of Valens's reign was spent campaigning against the Goths along the Danube River, and against the Persian menace along the eastern frontier.

In 376 CE, Valens gave to the Visigoths, who were being pushed westward by invading Huns, permission to cross the Danube and settle on Roman territory. These barbarian settlers, however, were so poorly treated by the Romans that they broke into open revolt. They rampaged through the Thracian and Moesian countryside, ravaging everything in their path. Valens advanced against the barbarians, but in a great battle fought near Hadrianopolis in 378 CE, the Roman army was almost annihilated and the emperor himself was slain. Although Valens was no longer emperor when Rome fell, his actions contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire.
