Product Overview

This large two-ounce 2026 $30 fine-silver coin features one of the most iconic images in Canadian art. In creating The Jack Pine (1916–17), Tom Thomson wasn't merely painting a tree, he was expressing the spiritual essence, beauty and strength of the Canadian wilderness. Over a century later, that image still resonates, reminding us of the enduring relationship between Canadians and the land.

A lone, windswept pine is shown rising from rocky ground, silhouetted against a sunset over a lake in the Ontario wilderness. Without the colour of the original painting, the coin expertly captures the rich texture of the art as a renewed vision of Thomson's composition. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

Tom Thomson (1877–1917) was a Canadian landscape artist, known for his iconic depictions of the Ontario wilderness, particularly Algonquin Park, which heavily influenced the Group of Seven. He was a humble woodsman who worked as a commercial artist before becoming a full-time painter, creating hundreds of vibrant oil sketches and major canvases like The Jack Pine, before tragically drowning in Canoe Lake at age 39, leaving behind a powerful legacy of Canadian art.
