Product Overview

This is a near-perfect superb gem uncirculated example of Canada's first silver dollar struck for circulation in 1935. It has been independently third-party certified as Mint State 66 by ICCS (International Coin Certification Service), Canada's most respected and trusted grading service. Only a very small percentage of coins from this era have survived in this exceptional condition, making it both visually appealing and extremely rare for collectors to acquire.

Unlike coins made especially for collectors, business-strike silver dollars like this were normally poured into and out of tote bins by the mint, bulk weighed, counted and then shipped loose to the banks in canvas bags holding 1,000 coins, which would normally bang against each other and cause many surface marks. A coin graded as Gem Uncirculated 66 will have only very minimal marks and a sharp strike, and will be far more attractive than a typical example from the same year. It will typically be the best surviving one coin from an entire original bag of 1,000.

Original silver coins dating back to the 1930s often have some golden or light brown surface toning. This is natural oxidation which is considered normal and even desirable by many collectors. The coin comes protected and security sealed in standard ICCS certification holder, including the assigned grade of MS-66 and a unique certification number.

The reverse design features an Indigenous person and a Voyageur paddling a canoe. In the canoe are bundles of goods; the bundles at the right are marked with "HB," representing the Hudson's Bay Company. The vertical lines in the background represent the aurora borealis. The obverse design features a portrait of King George V wearing the Imperial Crown.
