At a public ceremony on January 2, 1908, Governor General Earl Grey struck the Dominion's first domestically produced coin, a fifty-cent piece. The ceremony was closed with the striking of Canada's first bronze cent, signifying Ottawa's branch of Britain's Royal Mint officially being open for business. In 1931, the entire minting enterprise was entrusted in Canadian hands, officially making the mint a fully Canadian establishment. In 1936, Royal Canadian Mint's new refinery facility was built and designed to meet the demand of refining gold for mines and central banks throughout the world and remains in operation today. Royal Canadian Mint made history in 2007 when it produced the world's first million-dollar coin, certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest coin. To date, five of these 100 kg, 99.999% pure $1 million gold bullion coins have been purchased by Canadian and international investors.
