Product Overview

More than 100 years ago and in the midst of the First World War, Canada issued this one-dollar banknote featuring an image of Princess Patricia. Patricia was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and her father was the Duke of Connaught who served as Governor General of Canada from 1911 to 1916. She was named Colonel-in-Chief of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on February 22, 1918 and held that appointment until her death.

One dollar in 1917 had an equivalent purchasing power of about $16 today, and this was the most widely used note in Canadian commerce until a new note design was introduced in 1923. After 1923, used notes of the 1917 design were withdrawn and destroyed, with very few examples of this short-lived issue surviving even in the lowest grades for collectors.

This and other Dominion of Canada notes issued prior to the first issues by the Bank of Canada are sometimes referred to as "horse blankets," as they are substantially larger than the current size notes introduced in 1935. Almost all large-sized notes returned to the banking system after 1935 were destroyed by the Bank of Canada, adding significantly to the current scarcity of most Dominion of Canada issues.

This note is a superb grade example worthy of a fine banknote collection. It has been independently third-party certified by the Paper Money Guarantee Corporation (PMG) as "Choice Very Fine 35." PMG is the largest and most widely recognized company in the world that provides independent third-party grading of banknotes.

The back of the 1917 one-dollar note features the original centre block of the Canadian Parliament Buildings. When this note was originally designed, the image of the Parliament Buildings was simply the Canadian house of government. However, after the buildings burned down on February 3, 1916, this note became a commemorative of the original buildings.
