10K Yellow Gold Opal and Synthetic Ruby Necklace

This captivating yellow gold necklace features a vibrant and well-balanced opal and synthetic ruby centrepiece, blending bold colour with delicate vintage detailing. Measuring 18.5" in length, the necklace is designed around a striking central stone: a 6.22 carat oval-shaped, cabochon-cut opal, set vertically (north/south) in a slightly elongated position. 

The opal is held securely in place with four double prongs emerging from a hidden bezel setting, allowing light to interact freely with the stone’s smooth surface and green, blue, yellow and orange play-of-colour. Flanking the central opal on each side are diamond-shaped gold plates, each set with a round synthetic ruby, adding structure and visual continuity to the piece. 

On either side of these are oval cabochon opals, slightly smaller in size and set horizontally (east/west), their soft iridescence providing a dreamy contrast to the intense ruby tones. Each opal is bordered by triangular gold plates, each of which is set with another round synthetic ruby, completing a symmetrical, seven-stone focal arrangement that commands attention while maintaining a refined elegance. The stones are seamlessly integrated into a fine cable chain finished with a spring ring clasp, making the necklace lightweight and comfortable for daily wear while still offering a luxurious presence.

The use of synthetic rubies, particularly in combination with opals and geometric gold settings, is strongly indicative of mid-20th-century design, most likely from the 1950s to 1970s. During this era, synthetic rubies were highly popular in fine and semi-fine jewellery due to their affordability, durability, and visual appeal. The structured geometric plates paired with the soft, organic curves of the cabochons reflect the era’s tendency to mix modernist influences with romantic styling.
