Product Overview
The first of the two pieces included in this two-part set is a virtually identical restrike of the original 1867 Confederation medal in 10 ounces of pure silver. Only the edge lettering indicating the weight, purity and the Canada 150 issue date will easily distinguish the new restrike from the originals. The second piece is a new Canada 150 $100 coin, also struck in 10 ounces of .9999 fine silver. This coin uses the original design for the main vignette, while adding the $100 denomination and the double dates of 1867–2017. Both coins have a limited mintage of just 1,000 pieces. The $100 coin sold out from the RCM within minutes of its launch, and the original design restrike is now down to the final remaining quantities.
The allegorical design of the 1867 confederation medal tells an important part of the story of our country. The reverse design features Britannia, the classic personification of Great Britain, peacefully seated and adorned with a helmet and armour. She holds a trident in her right hand, while a shield ornamented with the Royal Union Flag rests at her side. A lion, the stalwart symbol of Great Britain, is seated at Britannia's feet and is resting its head on her knees. Britannia is presenting a figurative representation of the British North America Act that reads Confederation. This Confederation scroll is being bestowed upon four young maidens, who represent the four original provinces of 1867 (clockwise from the top): Ontario with a sickle and sheaf, symbolizing agriculture; Quebec holding a canoe paddle, representing commerce; Nova Scotia with a shovel, representing its rich mining; and New Brunswick with an axe, a representation of forestry. The prominent Latin motto around the reverse reads Juventas et Patrius Vigor, or Youth and Patriotic Strength.
The obverse of the restrike medal features an ultra-high relief effigy of Queen Victoria as she appeared in 1867, just as appeared on the originals. The obverse of the new $100 coin is new for Canada 150, and features effigies of both Queen Victoria as she appeared in 1867 and Queen Elizabeth as she appears on our coins in 2017. The restrike medal includes a certificate of authenticity from the Canadian Heritage Mint showing the mintage of just 1,000, while the $100 coin includes the Royal Canadian Mint certificate of authenticity also showing the mintage of just 1,000 pieces.
