Product Overview

In 1998, the Royal Canadian Mint produced a limited mintage of 25,000 special edition $5 pure silver maple leaf coins with a special privy mark to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the RCMP.  Unlike regular silver bullion coins, these one ounce coins are double struck with a frosted reverse cameo proof finish and have a small image of a mounted RCMP officer at the base of the maple leaf.  The display presentation also includes a special edition RCMP stamp sheet, an RCMP stamp First Day cover and an historical reproduction of the original oath taken by North West Mounted Police officers.

The North West Mounted Police was created in 1873 to establish law and order on Canada's western plains.  Beginning with a contingent of only 150 recruits, the Force paved the way for settlers by fostering friendly relations with indigenous people and eliminating the lawlessness that had flourished in the area.  For many years, the Mounties carried out every duty concerned with civil authority in the Northwest—from delivering mail to fighting fires.  Their deeds and heroes became legendary.

In 1920, the Force was given responsibility for enforcing federal laws across Canada, and its name was changed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).  By the 125th anniversary of the RCMP in 1998, the force had grown to more than 15,000, and now provides provincial policing services in all but two provinces.  The scarlet tunic and flat-brimmed Stetson still worn as formal dress have become a Canadian icon.
