Product Overview

This extremely high-grade Newfoundland silver 25-cent coin dates from 1917 and remains in near-perfect uncirculated condition. It has been authenticated and graded as "Choice Uncirculated MS-63" by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), and comes protected in a PCGS tamper-proof holder. This is the first of only two dates ever issued for this denomination in Newfoundland (1917 and 1919), and surviving examples in original choice uncirculated condition are extremely rare. The coin is struck in .925 fine silver and includes a "C" mint mark, indicating that the coin was struck in Canada at the Royal Canadian Mint, just nine years after the Canadian mint opened in 1908.

Prior to joining Canadian Confederation in 1949, Newfoundland issued its own series of coinage.  Prior to 1908, most of these coins were struck at the Royal Mint in England, as were Dominion of Canada coins. After Newfoundland joined Confederation, all coins of Newfoundland became legal tender currency of Canada, and they are highly sought-after by collectors today for their interesting history, extremely low mintages and low survival rates.
