In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson appointed a special committee of 15 members to create a new Canadian flag, which proposed a design that incorporated a stylized red maple leaf on a white background flanked by two red bars. The maple leaf had already been a symbol of Canada for a long time, and red and white were selected as the country's national colours by the royal proclamation that granted Canada's coat of arms in 1921. The distinctive national flag of Canada was officially unfurled for the first time on February 15, 1965.
This national flag silver jubilee coin is part of a 200-dollar series which started in 1990 and has been released every year since.
