2011 Hollywood Legends: Sophia Loren

Sophia Loren's father left the family very early in her life, and her mother tried to capitalize on Sophia's looks to support the family, leading the future actress to participate in various beauty competitions and to work as a model. In 1950, Loren met Italian film producer Carlo Ponti, who backed her and also gave her her stage name. In 1957 she was able to shoot her first film in the USA. In the '60s and '70s, she featured in the most successful films in Hollywood, and in 1962 she won an Oscar for best leading actress for her role in the film La Ciociara (Two Women).
