In 2014, one of the most spectacular designs to appear on any Canadian collector coin was the Matriarch Moon Mask, reproduced from an original work of art by Haida artist Carol Young. In order to capture the shape, texture and detail of the original, the Royal Canadian Mint employed ultra-high-relief striking to create not just a reproduction of the work of art, but to actually create a new work of art struck in both silver and gold.
The design honours women and their roles as leaders, sages and guardians of their tribe's history. The $200 gold coin version was produced with a mintage of just 500 pieces, using the purest .99999 ("five nines") gold which is usually reserved for the rarest premium issues. In order to create the exceptional depth, a thicker coin blank was used with a weight of more than one ounce.
