This 2014 $250 coin is struck in an impressive one kilogram of 99.99% fine silver, and features a generous diameter of 102.1mm, which allows for the superior craftsmanship of the Mint's engravers to be showcased to its full potential. This is the last of the 1 kilo coins from the Royal Canadian Mint's 1812 series. The coin features an intensely-rendered depiction of advancing American troops on the left, engaged in battle with British forces as they hold the high ground at Lundy's Lane; the image by Canadian artist Bonnie Ross is inspired by an illustration by Charles William Jeffrey, and captures the energy and emotion of this infamous battle. The obverse of the coin boasts a rarely-seen grid pattern behind the effigy of HRM Queen Elizabeth II.
This coin is engraved with the word "CANADA," the words "THE BATTLE OF LUNDY'S LANE 1814-2014 LA BATAILLE DE LUNDY'S LANE". The very low mintage of this coin is limited to only 400 worldwide. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt.
The Battle of Lundy's Lane (also known as the Battle of Niagara Falls) took place on the 25th of July in 1814, during the War of 1812; it has been described by historians as one of the bloodiest battles in Canadian history. American and British North American forces came to blows over territorial gains, and the Battle of Lundy's Lane was a grisly encounter that marked the height of the violence of this Anglo-American war.
