Product Overview

This 2016 $20 fine silver coin features our national emblem, the maple leaf. The coin weighs just over a half-ounce of pure silver, and the design features an artistic interpretation of the cycle of life through the evolution of the sugar maple. Each element draws parallels to the artist's own family tree, with each generation represented by the leaf's different stage of growth. The winged maple key known as a samara (bottom left) represents the children and the promise of new life, the curved appearance of the branch follows the progression of time as gentle flowers turn into young leaves, and the deeply veined appearance of the mature leaf then gives way to the broad elder leaf in autumn. Around the rim of the coin, the word "Canada," the date "2016" and the face value of "10 dollars" are engraved.

The maple leaf is a powerful symbol of Canadian identity and values, and the sugar maple is a very important member of the northeastern Canadian boreal forest. The species is most renowned for the clarity of its sap, which produces some of the world's purest and finest maple syrup. It takes a great deal of work to produce this tree's sweet golden bounty: one litre of syrup requires boiling down 40 litres of sap. It is also a highly resilient tree that can germinate, grow and thrive in areas with poor sunlight and problematic soil. It produces extremely hard and sought-after hardwood, which is used in the making of numerous items.
