Sailing through Canada’s waters and into history, tall ships have a certain mystique to them that harkens back to an era in Canada’s maritime history, one that was spurred by discovery, exploration, and trade. Designs in this set include the Bluenose, Marco Polo, Amazon and HMS Discovery.

Bluenose:
The design features a starboard side view of Canada’s iconic schooner, the Bluenose, under full sail and heeled at a distinctive racing angle. The legendary racing ship and working fishing vessel is brought to life through intricate engraving that captures her likeness in outstanding detail, including the rigging and even the dories on deck. Atop the foremast and mainmast, the Canadian Red Ensign and the Flag of Nova Scotia flap in the wind that fills the ship’s eight sails, as the Bluenose charges for victory in the waters of the North Atlantic.

Marco Polo:
The design features a three-quarter portside view of the iconic Canadian sailing vessel, Marco Polo. The fastest clipper in her day, the Marco Polo is depicted on an oceanic voyage under full sail. With the wind filling her billowing sails, the sight of Marco Polo’s masts rising up into the sky adds a regal grandeur to this portrait of the wooden vessel as her bow cuts through the water. Precision engraving faithfully recreates the ship’s appearance with great historical accuracy, while capturing the finer details that served as a testament to her shipbuilder.

Amazon:
The design features a starboard view of the Nova Scotia-built brigantine known as the Amazon. The 184-ton vessel is heeled over as the wind fills her canvas sails and drives her forward through the choppy waters of the Atlantic. Beautifully intricate engraving recreates the ship in extraordinary detail, from the rigging of her headsails to the wooden planks of her hull, and even captures the anchor attached to her bow. A pennant bearing the ship’s name flies atop the mainmast, while the British ensign flown from the gaff is depicted flapping in the strong wind.

HMS Discovery:
The design features a stern view of HMS Discovery during the famous 1791-1795 expedition in the Pacific. With the wind spilling from her topsails, the three-mast ship is a majestic sight as she sails along the rugged, tree-lined coast of present-day British Columbia. The upper portion of the ship’s rudder and her stern chasers are evident above the water, while the eye sweeps up past the captain’s cabin and stern decorations to the large Red Ensign of the British Royal Navy flapping in the wind. A glimpse of the starboard side reveals more of the wooden barque’s distinctive appearance and her rigging details, as recreated through meticulous engraving.

The obverse of each coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
