Product Overview

As Canada approached its 150th anniversary in July of 2017, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced a coin series that showcased Canada's iconic flora, fauna, landscapes and landmarks, with one coin for each province and territory. "Aurora Borealis at McIntyre Creek" is the ninth coin in the series, and represents the Yukon's natural beauty.

The coin is double-dated 1867–2017, has a denomination of $10, weighs just over a half-ounce of pure silver, and has limited mintage of 25,000. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin is also GST/HST exempt.

Based on a photograph taken by Canadian wilderness photographer Peter Mather, the reverse features vibrant colour over the detailed engraved image of nature's most colourful light display in Yukon. Heavy snow lines the edges of McIntyre Creek in Whitehorse, where the towering conifers are reflected in the still waters below. On this quiet winter night, the beauty of the northern scenery is heightened by the luminous green and pink hues of the aurora borealis overhead, as it dances across the night sky and lights up the landscape below. The reverse also features the engraved word "Canada" and the dates "1867–2017" to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
