A centaur is a mythological creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse. Centaurs were usually said to have been born of Ixion and Nephele (the cloud made in the image of Hera), dwelling in the mountains of Thessaly and Arcadia. They were best known for their fight with the Lapiths, which resulted from their attempt to carry off the bride of Pirithous, son and successor of Ixion.
