2020 $50 Fine Silver Coin Real Shapes - The Common Loon

The release of this first 2020 $50 fine silver coin in the new Real Shapes series from the Royal Canadian Mint caused an immediate frenzy, with all single coins and subscriptions for the six-coin set selling out from the Mint in minutes. The series replaces the popular Big Coin Series, and each coin in the new Real Shapes series has a limited mintage of just 1,200, coins including single versions and those included in subscriptions.

This loon design features the common loon, using the same design as the dollar coin introduced in 1987. However, the loon on this coin is fully shaped and much larger, with a width of about 84 mm and a weight of 100 grams (over three ounces) of fine silver. Robert-Ralph Carmichael's iconic loon floats on a still lake with a small island populated by conifers in the background. The intricate design is selectively plated with 24-karat gold, while the scene is portrayed within its own silver silhouette.

The obverse of each coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt as well as a repeating pattern of the common loon.
