2023 Collector Keepsake Coin Set - A Tribute to Canadian Artist Jean Paul Riopelle

Celebrate Canadian art with this 2023 keepsake coin set paying tribute to Jean Paul Riopelle (1923–2002). This seven-piece set includes both a coloured and classic version of Canada's new two-dollar commemorative coin, together with numismatic uncirculated examples of each denomination usually issued for circulation. However, for 2023 all the regular design coins are special collector issues featuring the posthumous effigy of Queen Elizabeth II which will not be issued for circulation. The Royal Canadian Mint has announced that it is waiting until new King Charles III dies are ready before striking new classic design coins for circulation, making these special-issue coins both unusual and highly collectible. Denominations include the five-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, one-dollar, classic design two-dollar, colour commemorative two-dollar, and non-colour commemorative two-dollar coins.

Through works that reveal a lifelong love of nature, and mosaics that reflect his belief in unconstrained creative expression, illustrious artist Jean Paul Riopelle used his art to push boundaries and command the attention of critics and art lovers worldwide. The coin design features two doves and other artistic elements from Riopelle's monumental fresco, Tribute to Rosa Luxemburg (L'Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg). This fresco was a memorial tribute to his 25-year companion Joan Mitchell. It is a monumental work comprised of 30 painted panels which unfold like a succession of animal paintings.
