This 2024 $200 one ounce fine gold coin combines intrinsic precious metal value with exceptional art representing Canadian cultures and traditions, a genuine premium quality turquoise gemstone, and an ultra low mintage of just 275 pieces. The coin celebrates the rights, freedoms and opportunities that make Canada one of the best places in the world to live, while recognizing the diverse backgrounds that meld together to form the social fabric of Canada.
The design by Canadian artist Soheila Esfahani features a turquoise gemstone surrounded by engraved patterns that celebrate the cultural heritage of Iranian Canadians, from today to those of Ancient Persia and beyond. While a paisley motif surrounds the gemstone centrepiece, a repeating maple leaf (symbolizing Canadian identity) and lotus flower (inspired by the reliefs of Persepolis) form a continuous circular pattern that also incorporates a Shah Abbasi floral motif and Eslimi patterns from traditional carpet designs.
Turquoise played a crucial role in the protection of the citizens of Persia as they travelled the great Silk Road to sell it far and wide over 2,000 years ago. It is believed that turquoise sourced from Persian mines was of the finest and purest quality because it had little trace of the brown veining you might see from other sources. This purity led Persians to believe that this incredible stone was the earthly connection to the heavens, such was the vibrancy of its blue hue. Great strength and protection could be gained from owning a turquoise gemstone, so it was one of the most desirable pieces of jewellery around.
Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse:
As the new King Charles III effigy was not yet ready as the dies for this coin were being completed, the obverse features a posthumous effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the addition of the double dates of her reign, 1952-2022. The four dots or pearls between the dates are intended to represent the four different effigies of the Queen that have appeared on Canadian coinage.
