Popular images of the wolf show it on the prowl with its piercing gaze focused on the viewer, or else howling at a full moon; in reality, the wolf is a social creature that would much rather keep its distance from humans. This is what makes the third Animal Portraits coin so unique: it's a close view of a wolf resting in a wintry Ontario landscape, its eyes passively observing its surroundings and its forepaws casually extended outside the framed centre portion to suggest a relaxed state during this rare, unguarded moment. The coin is reverse gold-plated, using frosted silver to showcase the grey fur of the wolf. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
