Product Overview
Captain James Cook's famous ship Endeavour has been beautifully inlaid on ocean-blue mother-of-pearl. The intricate levels of detail and the high level of relief makes the ship come alive. The inscription reads "1768 Cook's Voyage of Discovery" and the face value "25 dollars." The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions "Solomon Islands," "2018," "5 oz Ag 999" and "Elizabeth II."
Cook spent nearly three years based in Halifax, Nova Scotia with the Royal Navy from 1758 to 1762 as sailing master of the 60-gun HMS Pembroke, and was instrumental in the taking of Louisbourg (1758), and the conquests of Quebec (1759) and St. John's, Newfoundland in 1762. It was here that Cook developed much of his exceptional talent as a surveyor, cartographer and navigator. Cook revolutionized Europe's knowledge of the South Pacific through his voyages from 1768 to 1771. In 1776 he began a voyage to search for a Northwest Passage, and in 1778 anchored in Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island along with George Vancouver, who would return in 1792 and spend three years exploring and surveying Pacific coast and surrounding lands.
