Product Overview
This large and comprehensive collection includes some of the finest surviving coins available for all 35 different dates of coins issued in Canada from 1962 to 1996. All six denominations issued in each year are included (cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar and dollar), plus the two-dollar coin introduced in 1996. The first six sets, dated from 1962 to 1967, all include four coins struck in silver, and each sets contains 1.1 ounces of fine silver. While the coins are all in proof-like condition specially struck by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) with a mirror finish and near-flawless surfaces, the coins in these sets have been carefully selected as some of the best premium-quality coins from surviving sets. All 35 sets come displayed in original sealed RCM "pliofilm" packaging. There are 211 proof-like coins total in 35 annual set envelopes.
Highlights of the 1962, 1963, 1965 and 1966 Proof-Like Sets
One of the highlights of these sets is the Voyageur silver dollar. The design on each of the dollar coins is the same design as was on Canada's first dollar coin issued in 1935. It features an Indigenous person and a Voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company), paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind-swept trees. The vertical lines in the background represent the Northern Lghts.
Highlights of the 1964 Proof-Like Set
One of the highlights of this set is the special commemorative silver dollar marking the 100th anniversary of the meetings in 1864 held at Charlottetown, PEI and at Quebec City. It was these meetings that resulted in the formation of Canada as a country in 1867. The design on the silver dollar depicts the emblems of four of the country's founding ethnic groups: the French fleur-de-lis, the Irish shamrock, the Scottish thistle and the English rose.
Highlights of the 1967 Proof-Like Set
In celebration of Canada's 100th birthday, the mint held a competition for special centennial coin designs. After receiving many submissions from artists across Canada, the mint panel selected the wildlife designs of the New Brunswick artist and sculptor Alex Colville. All of the coins are double-dated "1867–1967" and represent the end of a long era of silver coinage in Canada.
