Product Overview
Prior to printing the new $4 notes for circulation, a few test notes or "printer's proofs" were printed from the new printing plates. These proofs are one-sided and usually printed on special paper to show all the detail from the intaglio dies. These first proofs would have been presented to the Minister of Finance and other government officials to approve the final design and authorize the banknote printing company to start printing the notes for circulation.
While Dominion of Canada proof notes like these were never produced for collectors, occasionally the engraver was allowed to keep one or more samples of his work, or a government official may have retained a sample note.
The $4 Dominion of Canada banknote is one of the rarest and most sought-after of all Government of Canada notes, with the only issues dated 1900 and 1902. The commissioned design for this note was to show the Sault Ste. Marie locks which connect Lake Superior and Lake Huron. While the 1900 issue did in fact show the Sault Ste. Marie locks, the designers mistakenly showed the American side of the locks rather than the Canadian side. Amazingly, the error was not noticed until after the first issue had been printed. The 1900 "US Locks" notes were used for a short time only until a new note showing the Canadian locks was prepared and released in 1902.
• Face design: Lady Minto/Sault Ste. Marie US Locks/Lord Minto
• Back design: lathework, counters and "Dominion of Canada" over the Parliament Buildings and Library, viewed from Nepean Point
• This is a "one only" item. The note in the photo is the exact item you will receive
