Product Overview

Own a piece of incredible history dating back more than 100 years with this complete set of Canada's $5 and $10 gold coins issued from 1912 to 1914. These impressive historic gold coins were struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in the years immediately leading up to the First World War using gold from the Canadian Klondike. They were intended to serve for both general circulation in Canada and for trade with the United States.

This six-piece collection includes a $5 and a $10 gold coin from 1912, 1913 and 1914. The coins are all struck in 22-karat gold, with the $5 coins containing about a quarter-ounce of pure gold each, and the $10 coins having a net gold weight of about half an ounce each.

This series of Canadian gold coins was first provided for by legislation in 1908, but it was not until 1911 that designs for both a $5 and $10 gold coin were approved. At this time, the face value of coins was still very closely tied to the intrinsic value of the metal they contained, and paper money was still redeemable for silver and gold. The weight and purity of both the $5 and $10 Canadian gold coins of 1912 to 1914 are virtually identical to the same denominations issued in the United States. On this basis, the coins were an effective tool to facilitate international trade, particularly with the United States.
