Product Overview

This 1850s-era $4 City of Toronto note is an official collector reprint produced by the Canadian Banknote Company in 1984 from the original printing plates to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Toronto. The note is in uncirculated condition and features raised intaglio printing just like the original, but can be distinguished as a more modern collectible by the marking on the back signed by the president of the Canadian Banknote Company.

During the 1850s, coinage was often scarce throughout pre-Confederation Canada, while cities like Toronto were expanding rapidly. One of the innovative solutions was for some cities or municipalities to issue their own banknotes for circulation, which provided financing for the local government while also facilitating commerce. In the early 1850s, the City of Toronto issued this $4 interest bearing note, which was also equivalent to four British pounds. The central vignette provides an historic glimpse into what the Toronto waterfront looked like more than 170 years ago.

Issued original notes are extremely rare today and can sell for more than $5,000, even in well-used condition. This collector reprint from 1984 provides an excellent opportunity for collectors to own a high-quality example of this rare note at an affordable price.
