Although banknotes released by the Bank of Canada between 1937 and 1953 were all dated 1937, the notes are not all the same. Since the signatures of the deputy governor and governor of the Bank of Canada appear on the bottom of the notes, signatures changed when there was a change in these bank positions.
Three different signature combinations exist on 1937 banknotes. From 1937 to 1938, the signatures of J.A.C. Osborne and G.F. Towers appeared on new notes. Notes released from late 1938 to 1949 were signed D. Gordon and G.F. Towers, while the remaining notes until the end of the series were signed J.E. Coyne and G.F. Towers.
The Osborne/Towers signature notes are by far the scarcest of the 1937 issue. Only about two percent of the total number of 1937 notes issued were printed with this signature combination. As the oldest notes of the 1937 issue, the vast majority of these notes were worn out and destroyed. Surviving examples are extremely scarce today and highly sought-after by collectors.
