Product Overview

While Elizabeth II immediately became Queen upon the death of her father in February of 1952, her effigy first appeared on coins in Canada in 1953, the year of her coronation. In the early 1950s, half dollars were made of silver with a face value similar to their precious metal worth, and still widely used in commerce. Throughout the 70 year reign of Her Majesty, the coinage of Canada has evolved, including half dollars becoming an unusual and typically low mintage denomination. This complete collection includes every date of issue of the Canadian half dollar made both for circulation and in special issue collector rolls, spanning the entire reign of Queen Elizabeth as well as the 1952 King George VI issue from the year Elizabeth became queen. The 2023 Queen Elizabeth II posthumous issue and the 2023 first issue of King Charles III are also included.

During this period, coins were issued in every year except 2003 and 2004. In 2002, the half dollar featured a special coronation effigy of the Queen, marking the golden jubilee of her reign. In 2021, two different half dollars designs were issued, including one featuring the Queen’s father King George VI. In total, this complete collection includes 72 coins in a premium display. 16 of the coins are struck in silver. This is a high quality collection with the coins from 1952 to 1958 in extremely fine to near uncirculated condition, and all of the coins from 1959 to 2023 in brilliant uncirculated condition.
