Product Overview
This ancient Roman coin dates from 330 to 335 CE and was issued by Emperor Constantine the Great to commemorate the relocation of the Roman Empire's capital from Rome to Constantinople. The coin is in average circulated condition, making it easy and affordable to own a genuine piece of ancient history.
After reuniting the two halves of the Roman Empire in 324 CE, Constantine declared the city of Byzantium to be its new capital. Although it was far from the old capital (located in what is now modern-day Turkey), it was strategically selected for political and economic advantages. More than just marking an event, the coins effectively served as propaganda to ensure the change in the capital widely known and to emphasize continuity and stability.
The new capital was initially called "Nova Roma," but on May 11, 330 CE, the city was renamed "Constantinople" in honor of the emperor. To commemorate this event, two different coin types were minted: one celebrating the new capital of Constantinople and the other celebrating old Rome. The accompanying coin celebrates the new city of Constantinople and features a "Constantinopolis" personification of the city with a Victory goddess.
