Gifts of Diamonds

Product Overview

This outstanding antique brooch was custom- and hand-made in 18K yellow gold and features a gorgeous oval carved coral cameo. The cameo depicts a lady's profile (shoulders up) with her hair swept up and held with a beaded orange-and-white clip before falling in ringlets around her shoulders. A brushed leaf-and-flower design of 18K yellow gold sweeps across the bottom and is soldered to the high-polished backing that protects the cameo. Also soldered to the back is an easel-shaped double pin that pinches to close into a double curl receiver, called a "C" clasp.

Women began collecting cameos to prove cultural status during the Renaissance and Elizabethan periods. During the reign of Elizabeth 1 (1558–1603), however, they found their way into general fashion, with women wearing them as a sign of status. But the most well-known era for cameos was inspired by Queen Victoria and Napoleon Bonaparte in the 19th century, and it wasn't until then that cameos which featured a face in profile became popular.

One of the quickest ways to tell if your cameo is real or fake is to examine its material. Real, authentic cameos are made from natural material and gemstones such as onyx, sardonyx, agate, ivory, coral and lava. In contrast, fake, mass-produced cameos are made of plastic, resin or glass.
