Product Overview
This ring is custom crafted in 10K high polished yellow gold. It features a 916.7 gold (22K) British Sovereign coin (22 mm diameter with milled edge), dated 1903. The obverse (facing down), is a design by George William De Saulles that features the bare head of Edward VII facing right and reads "EDWARDVS VII D:G: BRITT: OMN:REX F:D: IND:IMP" and on the reverse, a design by Benedetto Pistrucci, shows an image of St. George on horseback holding a short sword and wearing a helmet, cape and boots. The horse is rearing over a dragon whose side is pierced by a broken lance, the haft of the lance is on the ground behind the horse. The date, 1903 and artist's initials B.P. are in exergue and the mint mark (M), notating the Melbourne Mint, is in the ground line above the date. The coin is prong-set from behind and bezel set on the front. Sixty-two round brilliant cut diamonds (0.30 ctw) surround the coin.
Albert Edward, as he was christened, was born at Buckingham Palace 9th November, 1841, eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Edward VII ascended to the throne upon the death of Queen Victoria on 22nd January, 1901, by which time he was 59 years old. His long wait as heir apparent earned him a reputation as something of a playboy. He was in fact the most popular king England had known since the earlier 1660s. Although named officially as Albert Edward, he choose to rule under the name Edward VII, stating that he did not wish to "undervalue the name of Albert" and diminish the status of his father with whom the "name should stand alone". Edward died on 6th May, 1910 at the age of 68. 1903 was the second year of Edward VII's coinage and the Melbourne mint ran a mintage of 3,521,000 coins.
