14K White and Yellow Gold Black Tahitian South Sea Pearl and Diamond Bow-Shaped Earrings

These elegant, leverback, drop-style earrings each feature a 11.30 mm to 11.50 mm black Tahitian South Sea pearl, peg-mounted into a 14K white gold beehive-shaped, ribbed cap with diamond trim. The pearls display green and rose overtones. A white gold bow, cinched in the middle by a yellow gold bar, is attached to the top and each bow contains 11 round, brilliant-cut diamonds. The 60 diamonds combine for 0.75 carats.

Tahitian pearls, also known as black South Sea pearls or simply black pearls, are cherished for their incredibly exotic colours and mirror-like lustre. Whereas other pearl types are typically limited in colour, Tahitian pearls consist of hundreds of overtones with incredibly exotic colours. These pearls are produced by the Pinctada margaritifera oyster, which is found exclusively in Tahiti and several other French Polynesian islands. The only naturally black pearls on the planet are from the Tahitian family of gems, though these naturally coloured "black" pearls aren't actually black, but instead have hues of various dark colours, such as grey, purple, blue or green, which create an illusion of black. The Tahitian pearl colour is created by the tissue of its mantle, which is determined by the colours within the donor mollusc's shell. These gems will also display strong overtones of peacock, red, green or eggplant. Tahitian pearls are generally measure about 9 mm to 15 mm, and the larger the gem, the rarer it is, making it even more valuable on the pearl jewellery market.
