Product Overview
This beautifully crafted 14K yellow gold brooch/pendant is a striking example of vintage design, likely dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900 to 1915, during the Edwardian to early Art Nouveau period. It features a regal 8.18 ctw oval amethyst, prong-set in an east-west orientation at the heart of the piece. The amethyst’s rich, velvety purple hue is characteristic of the high-quality stones favoured during this era. Surrounding the central gem are six stylized open leaf or petal motifs, each adorned with six round seed pearls set in the V-tipped sections of the design. A slightly larger seed pearl is bezel-set in the centre of each motif, extending outward via a short gold bar to create a dimensional floral effect. (Please note: one of these bars and its seed pearl is missing.) The perimeter of the piece is further embellished with six gold bars, each extending from the mid-point of one leaf and spanning to the next. Suspended in the middle of each of these bars in a buttercup-style setting that cradles a single seed pearl in a cupped housing. These delicate pearl accents are consistent with the Edwardian era’s preference for soft, romantic materials and intricate metalwork.
The brooch is fitted with a horizontal pin back and features a flip circular bale, allowing it to be worn as either a brooch or a pendant—an example of the practical, convertible jewellery designs popular during this period. The use of seed pearls and floral motifs, and the prominence of amethyst (a gemstone associated with royalty and spirituality) combined with the finely detailed metalwork, all suggest this piece was made during a time when craftsmanship and subtle elegance were prized in fine jewellery. A wonderful example of period design, it remains both wearable and collectible, steeped in the romanticism of a bygone era.
