This lovely mabe pearl necklace is crafted in 14K yellow gold. It features alternating oval and bar-high polished links that secure to an oblong lobster claw clasp. Both the open oval and bar links graduate larger in size towards the centerpiece, at which point six of the bar links -three per side- are each set with three round brilliant cut diamonds. The eighteen diamonds combine for .40 carats and display nice, near colourless, H-I colour. The final two diamond-set bar links are affixed to a high polished gold bezel containing a 14.60mm round-shaped mabe pearl with strong pinkish, bluish, and greenish overtones.
Mabe pearls, also known as blister pearls, are half-pearls that are cultivated on the inside of a mollusk's shell. A small nucleus, usually made out of mother-of-pearl, is attached to the shell of the mollusk and left to accumulate nacre over a period that usually takes two or three years. Once the pearls are ready for harvest, they are cut out of the shell and their nucleus is removed, leaving a hollow pearl. The pearl is then filled with a colourless resin to reinforce its structure, and sealed with a mother-of-pearl backing to close everything up.
