Product Overview

Elegant, expressive, and richly detailed, this vintage mid-20th-century (1950s to 1970s) brooch in 14K yellow gold is a stunning tribute to floral and ornamental design. Inspired by the grace of nature and the artistry of bygone eras, the brooch features a large, openwork floral motif with dynamic movement and intricate craftsmanship. At the heart of the design is a central circle that cradles a prong-set round dyed green chalcedony. Radiating outward are seven rounded open petals, each adorned with delicate granulation at the tips, an age-old decorative technique adding texture and dimension.

Each petal is also prong-set with a round green chalcedony, enhancing the floral aesthetic with luminous colour. Adding to the complexity, each petal branches from the central circle with a pointed inner motif, forming a subtle pinwheel design that creates a sense of movement and symmetry. Elegant gold swirls and curlicues wind through the composition, adding ornate flair and a vintage charm that elevates the overall artistry. Suspended from the curlicues are four dangling drops, each accented with an additional round green chalcedony, offering graceful movement and sparkle.

Completing the piece is a dramatic hinged open pear-shaped drop at the bottom, framed by 16 graduated round green chalcedonies and centreed with a larger stone that swings gently like a pendulum—adding both visual intrigue and kinetic beauty. In total, the brooch features 28 round dyed green chalcedony stones with a combined weight of 3.93 carats, offering a rich green hue that is both calming and captivating.

Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz known for its smooth, waxy luster and translucent appearance. Valued since ancient times, chalcedony was believed to promote balance, protection, and emotional healing. Dyed green chalcedony, in particular, has been prized in vintage jewellery for its soft, luminous colour that evokes serenity and nature.

Large, stylized floral brooches were very popular in 1950s–1960s costume and fine jewellery. The pinwheel effect and symmetry reflect mid-century elegance. Dyed chalcedony saw increased use in the mid-20th century, especially in pieces aiming for a colourful but affordable alternative to jade, emerald or chrysoprase. Decorative granulation, though ancient in origin, was revived in vintage-inspired or artisan jewellery during the 1960s and 1970s, often paired with swirling, filigree-like accents. Yellow gold was dominant throughout the 1950s–1970s, especially in bold, statement pieces. Given the ornate detailing, gemstone choice, and construction, this brooch was most likely produced between 1955 and 1975, possibly leaning closer to the 1960s.
