14K Yellow Gold Old European-Cut Diamond Cluster Ring

This antique 14K yellow gold diamond cluster ring features a beautifully hand crafted arrangement of old European-cut diamonds in a distinctly floral composition. At the center, a 0.15 ctw old European-cut diamond is secured by eight delicate prongs and surrounded by nine additional old European-cut diamonds, creating a softly rounded cluster reminiscent of a flower in bloom.

Each of the surrounding diamonds is individually set with a single prominent prong at its outer edge, while the remainder of the stone is partially enclosed by the surrounding goldwork. This distinctive combination of prong and semi-bezel setting is characteristic of hand fabricated antique jewellery, where each stone was carefully fitted into its setting by the maker. The irregularities and sculptural quality of the goldwork contribute to the ring’s authentic handmade character.

The undergallery is particularly evocative, featuring pierced goldwork that forms a crown-like silhouette beneath the cluster. A narrow, high polished band completes the design, decorated with hand engraving resembling the delicate texture and branching patterns of tree limbs. Together with the floral cluster, this organic engraving reinforces the ring’s nature inspired aesthetic.

The diamonds are old European cuts, a style that developed from the earlier old mine cut and became especially popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Characterized by a rounded outline, relatively small table, high crown, deep pavilion, and typically a large, open culet, old European cuts were fashioned by hand with an emphasis on candlelight performance rather than the precise optical symmetry of modern brilliant cuts. Their broader facets and distinctive proportions can produce a soft, romantic scintillation and a lively play of light with considerable antique charm.

Based on the use of old European-cut diamonds, the hand fabricated setting techniques, pierced crown-like undergallery, and nature inspired hand engraving, this ring is most consistent with the Edwardian period, circa 1905–1915, although elements of the construction could place it somewhat earlier or later within the late Victorian-to-Edwardian transition. The combination of delicate floral styling and intricate handwork is particularly characteristic of jewellery made during this period.
