14K Yellow Gold Sun Motif Indigenous Art Pendant, Signed "DLL"

This radiant yellow gold Indigenous art pendant is beautifully rendered in the form of the Sun, a powerful symbol of life, healing, and abundance in Northwest Coast Indigenous traditions. Often depicted as a round face with balanced, symmetrical rays, the sun represents warmth, peace, and the sustaining energy that connects all living beings. The sun’s rays are seen as the sacred pathway between the earth and the sky world. In many Indigenous stories, Raven, the creator and transformer, freed the sun from a confining box and placed it in the sky, gifting humanity with light, warmth, and life. Ancient beliefs even tell of reaching the sun by climbing a chain of arrows and returning to earth by sliding down its rays.

The pendant is signed “DLL” on the back, identifying the work of Kwakwaka’wakw artist Don L. Lancaster. Born May 31, 1965, in Hazelton, British Columbia, Lancaster creates highly individualistic pieces rooted in Kwakwaka’wakw tradition. His family crests include the Sun, Sisiutl (double-headed sea serpent), and the Wolf, making this sun design especially significant. Designing jewellery since 1997, Don Lancaster works full-time in gold and silver, drawing early inspiration and technical training from renowned Northwest Coast goldsmith Norman Seaweed. His work is known for its strong cultural symbolism, refined craftsmanship, and deep respect for ancestral teachings.
