This intricate art deco style ring is beautifully crafted in 18K white gold and features a prominent 10.70mm round shaped black Tahitian cultured pearl at its centre. The wide band is pierced to reveal a series of four scalloped rows, two on the top and two on the bottom, with each bead set with diamonds and trimmed with milgrain detail. A marquise shaped plate, set with a diamond, flanks the pearl on each side and fills the opening left by the scalloping. The seventy-six round brilliant cut diamonds combine for 0.58 carats.
Art deco was a prominent style for jewelry in the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by geometric patterns and abstract designs using diamonds and gems. Art Deco has it's distinct designs using a thin, hand carved/bladed technique known as filigree. Bezels and edges were adorned with milgrain and delicate details usually with hard lines, sometimes abstract and other times symmetrical.
Black Tahitian pearls are the only truly naturally occurring black pearls in contrast to black freshwater and Akoya pearls which are always dyed. Beautiful Tahitian pearls are among the largest pearls in the world, ranging in size from approximately 8mm to 18mm. The only larger commercially harvested pearls today are South Sea. Luster, surface purity and shape are also important factors when determining the quality of a pearl.
