Product Overview

This is a beautifully crafted pair of 18-karat yellow gold drop earrings, made in Italy, showcasing an elegant combination of gems, cameo carving and fine metalwork. Each earring begins at the top with a 1.15-carat bezel-set cabochon-cut amethyst, to which the post and butterfly back attach. From the amethyst there is a descending element composed of a double horizontal bar, which is attached to an engraved crest motif. Below that crest is a single horizontal bar, with each bar (both in the double and the single) capped at both ends by small gold beads, lending a slight architectural, decorative accent. The drop portion is connected to this upper structure via gold pillars or supports, which open and gently curve around a carved cameo, providing negative space. The cameo is integrated into the gold itself and represents a Roman woman in profile, with classical touches: her hair curled, wearing what appears to be a toga. The earrings likely date to the 1960s to the 1990s as the use of cameo motifs in gold, especially carved into the metal rather than set shell cameos, suggests an interest in classical revival or neoclassical styles, which saw revivals in mid-century fine jewellery.
