18K Yellow Gold Tahitian Pearl and Diamond Ring

This 18K yellow gold ring is centred with a 11.2-mm round black Tahitian pearl. A skirted dome-shaped platform, set with three rows of round, brilliant-cut diamonds, supports the pearl while providing a sparkling light display. The 48 diamonds combine for 1.45 carats, and the underside of the dome is finished with a pierced "Y" design.

Tahitian pearls are grown in French Polynesia and are the only naturally occurring "black" pearls—black Akoya and black freshwater pearls are dyed. Tahitian pearls are bead nucleated which means that the pearl farmer will very skillfully insert a round shell bead inside the oyster with the hope that the oyster will produce a round pearl. Less than 10 percent of harvested pearls will be round, and the others will fall into the category of near-round.
