Custom-Made 14K Yellow Gold Cabochon-Cut 6-Ray Star Tiger's Eye Ring

This unique custom-made ring is crafted in 14K yellow gold and features a four-prong oval cabochon cut six-ray tiger's eye, at its centre. The elaborate setting around the stone contains an artistic three-dimensional scalloped wave, reminiscent of the petals of a flower. Bark detailing highlights the rise, fall and curve of the petals in an asymmetrical fashion and extends into the pierced shank.

Tiger's eye is a member of the chalcedony mineral class. It has a silky lustre and an opaque transparency. The meaning of tiger's eye is self-confidence and inner strength. The name chatoyance originates from the French word chatoyer, which means "to shine like a cat's eye." The analogy also matches the way a cat's pupils will narrow to a thin slit under bright light. Chatoyance is an optical phenomenon in which a band of reflected light, known as a "cat's-eye," moves just beneath the surface of a cabochon-cut gemstone. Stones cut in cabochon that reflect light in the form of intersecting bands of light are known as asterias. The words asteria, asteriated and asterism are derived from the Greek word aster, meaning "star." The star may be four, six (as in this case) or even twelve-rayed. Although stars are most commonly seen in ruby and sapphire, there are other gems that occasionally display asterism.
