LeVian is a family-owned jewellery company with a long history, dating from the 15th century. LeVian is known for its love of reinventing several categories of fine jewellery through unique combinations and colours of gems and gold to create the various collections. LeVian insists on having every design start with an original idea, sketched out with pencil and paper. This time and effort spent in new designs has led to an estimated 100,000 original designs over the years. Today, LeVian is at the forefront of creating the most exquisite natural fancy-colour diamond and gemstone jewellery.
Kunzite is a relative newcomer to the array of coloured stones available for use in jewellery, and is the light pink to violet-ish purple variety of the mineral spodumene. In 1902, specimens of an as-yet-unidentified pink crystal were found in San Diego County, California, and sent to Tiffany & Co.’s mineralogist, George Kunz; he was able to confirm that the crystals were, in fact, an unrecognized colour of spodumene. The stone was named kunzite in honour of George Kunz in 1903. Kunzite has beautiful pleochroism, an optical effect where a gemstone’s colour can change depending on what angle it is viewed. Additionally, kunzite stones are dichroic, meaning they only show two pleochroic colours. Kunzite also displays phosphorescence, the glow of a gemstone in a dark space after being exposed to sunlight or UV light. Whether it’s pleochroism or phosphorescence, both optical effects can be best seen in larger kunzite crystals, gemstones or jewellery with open bar or prong settings.
