Product Overview

This outstanding strand features 39 baroque-shaped South Sea pearls, each unique in shape and colour. They range in size from 9.9 mm to 12.9 mm in diameter and display cream, white, silver and yellow body colour with pinkish, greenish, bluish and yellowish overtones. Four 18K yellow gold-fluted ball-shaped spacers separate the front five pearls and a large 10K yellow gold lobster claw clasp is located at the back. The strand measures 22 inches in length (which is considered a matinee length; 20 to 24 inches) and is works wonderfully with business attire or a dress. While classically this length would be reserved for semi-formal events, many women will rock strands of this length with casual clothing.

South Sea pearls come from the Pinctada maxima mother oyster, which is one of the largest oysters in the world. These pearls are most easily identified by their size, as they are, in turn, among the largest in the world. Most South Sea pearls range in size from 8 mm to 20 mm but can grow even larger, and are best known for their softer glowing, silk-like lustre. The qualities of a pearl’s lustre are contingent on the health of the ocean water and plankton from which the nacre forms; consistently thick layers are best. Pearls from the South Sea typically have a thicker layer of nacre relative to other pearls.

White South Sea pearls are cultivated mainly in waters north of Australia, while gold and coloured South Sea pearls are most commonly from the Philippines and Indonesia. In spite of South Sea pearls being valued for their round shape, some baroque shapes—irregular or oblong-shaped pearls—can also be breathtaking.

South Sea pearls are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The chances of finding a perfectly round South Sea pearl is extremely low since only 10 to 30 percent of each harvest is considered spherical or nearly spherical. From that same harvest, a good portion of the pearls will be defined as baroque, and are highly sought-after for the beauty of their organic shapes.
