Product Overview
The note was issued by the National Bank of Canada, or La Banque Nationale as it was known in francophone Canada, at a time when Canada's chartered banks were authorized to issue their own banknotes. This is a fully issued note, hand-signed at the bottom by a bank official as the note was being issued. Like most other surviving notes of this issue, the note was redeemed by the bank more than 100 years ago, and accordingly has been punch-cancelled.
Bank History:
La Banque Nationale was founded in 1860 and had over 230,000 customers by 1918. In 1923, La Banque Nationale merged with the Provincial Bank and La Banque d'Hochelaga to form La Banque Canadienne Nationale. This was the largest francophone bank in Canada with over 260 branches. In 1979, Banque Canadienne Nationale merged with La Banque Provinciale du
Canada to form the National Bank of Canada.
