Product Overview

This is an attractive premium-quality bronze coin issued by the Roman Emperor Theodosius II from 408 to 450 CE. It would have been recognized and readily accepted by Roman citizens who used it on a daily basis over 1,600 years ago. On the front of the coin is the likeness of Emperor Theodosius II. On the back is one of the various gods and goddesses of the Roman pantheon.

Theodosius II
Theodosius II was the eldest son of Eudoxia and Arcadius who at the age of seven became the Roman Emperor of the east. He was gentle and scholarly, however he was heavily influenced by his eldest sister Pulcheria who pushed him towards orthodox Christianity. Pulcheria was the primary driving power behind the emperor and many of her views became official policy.

Theodosius had a hand in founding the University of Constantinople in 425 and in supervising compilation of the Theodosian Code (published 438), which codified the laws issued after 312. Theodosius died from injuries suffered during a hunting accident.
