Product Overview

This is a near-perfect gem uncirculated unissued specimen 1926 five-pound note from the archives of the Provincial Bank of Ireland. It has been independently third-party graded by PCGS as Gem Uncirculated 66 PPQ (premium paper quality.) The note was produced close to a century ago and stored in the vaults of the Provincial Bank of Ireland. The design features both English and Irish themes, with a Britannia figure and a seated Hibernia figure. Perhaps most significantly, there were no issued notes of this denomination in this year.

Just as in Canada, nearly 100 years ago chartered banks in Ireland were authorized to issue their own banknotes, and the Provincial Bank of Ireland was authorized to issue banknotes for use within Ireland. And as in Canada, original notes from this era are extremely scarce and highly sought-after by collectors. Although these notes were issued by an Irish bank, they were in pounds sterling and guaranteed by the Bank of England.

This note dates from an important turning point in the history of Ireland, and it is this history that resulted in this note never being issued. In May of 1921, Ireland was divided into Northern and Southern Ireland. Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom, while Southern Ireland (Republic of Ireland) gained independence. At first, the same money that had been used before the partition continued to be used throughout both Northern and Southern Ireland. But in the late 1920s, currency was separated, and new notes were issued for both Northern Ireland and the newly independent Southern Ireland. While this 1926 £5 note was planned to be issued for circulation, it was at this point that currency reform was about to be implemented, and final notes were never released. Today, the few surviving unissued samples of the 1926 £5 note serve as a significant relic of this time in Irish history.
